3 pm kick offs. You may have seen in the press that IMUSA (the Manc
equivalent of us) started a campaign in March/April about the lack of
fixtures at the traditional 3pm on Saturdays due to the demands of Sky/UEFA.
We (alongside AISA the Arsenal supporters association) spoke to IMUSA
on the phone about the problem, passed on our views and provided them
with full data for the campaign for last season's LFC fixtures with
regards to kick off time, day of kick off, and any particularly obnoxious
fixture changes (Newcastle away to a night game on New Years Day for
instance) or transport problems encountered. IMUSA have this week had
a meeting with a Parliamentary committee looking into all aspects of
football and specificaly asked to comment on 3pm kick offs. We hope
to bring you further details as soon as possible.

We have heard that the "prestige" friendly at Anfield which
was due to have been played on Saturday August 9th (against Barcelona
before they cancelled) has been switched to Friday August 8th. No confirmation
of opponents yet. As with everything this summer it's worth getting
quadruple confirmation before booking anything.

Some of the confusion over the pre-season has been cleared up. The Summer
Tour will now travel to Thailand and Hong Kong instead of the original
Shanghai and Hong Kong. The match in Thailand takes place on July 24th
in Bangkok at the same venue LFC played in 2001. The second match takes
place at the Hong Kong Stadium on July 27th.
Liverpool's confirmed pre-season matches:
Wednesday, 16th July Cologne (a) 8.15pm
Saturday, 19th July Crewe Alexandra (a) 3pm
Thursday, 24th July Thailand National team (a)
Sunday, 27th July Hong Kong National team (a)
Friday, 1st August: Amsterdam - Ajax (a) 8.45pm
Sunday, 3rd August Amsterdam - Galatasary (a) 6.30pm
Tuesday, 5th August Aberdeen (a) 7pm

Pre-season chaos still reigns. After the drip drip feed of information
and non-confirmations by the club over the whole pre-season programme,
the situation over the China Tour remains unclear. It's an open secret
that the tour has been cancelled "to some extent" over fears
of the SARS virus, leaving many fans out of pocket (with their insurance
policies not covering cancellations). In contrast to every other Premiership
club with tours to China planned, Liverpool steadfastly refused to confirm
the cancellation weeks after others had called a halt.
We believe negotiations have taken place with the South African FA
for a replacement tour with the head of the South African FA confirming
by email that we are booked to play Kaiser Chiefs in Johannesburg on
July 26th. However even this should not to be taken as fact.
With the SARS virus crisis easing, particularly in Hong Kong, information
today suggests Liverpool are now looking to play a friendly in Malaysia,
with again preliminary agreements in place, with a second game in Hong
Kong if the all clear is given. If concerns over SARS remain, a further
friendly in Malaysia could be arranged.
It has become patently clear over the early parts of the summer that
the club's communication with fans still leaves much to be desired.
Along with the usual gripes about the ticket office, poor communication
has always been high on the list of complaints about LFC to ILSA, often
combined with the rejoinder "they only care about getting the fans'
money in".
This summer we have seen our opposition announce dates and ticket details
two weeks in advance of LFC (how many fans booked flights to Hamburg
for instance?) - there has to be coordination on this and joint announcements
by both clubs. We have also seen the official website and the Liverpool
Echo carry conflicting information on the fixtures.
The club could and should be doing better.

the RheinEnergie Stadion in Cologne.

Houllier sat next to the 8 yr-old son of the owner on a plane back to
Liverpool. No date has been confirmed yet.

with Dario Gradi's newly promoted First Division Crewe will take place
on Saturday, 19th July at the Alexandra Stadium (kick-off 3pm).

The friendly at Anfield against Barcelona on August 9th has been cancelled
as the Catalan club are now playing Man City the following day to open
the Manc club's new stadium. A new friendly against a high profile club
at home is now planned. Unusually the Barcelona press office was unaware
of either the proposed Liverpool or Man City games!
4/6/03
Liverpool
has been selected as European Capital of Culture for 2008. This should
prove to be a massive boost for the city in terms of prestige, culture,
regeneration, tourism and the general economy. Congratulations to all
those involved in the bidding process.
3/6/03
The Cologne friendly has not been confirmed by LFC yet as Cologne may
yet play a German League Cup tie ........ the saga continues.
