ILSA would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Championship-filled New Year.

Over the holiday period there will be less updates so we'd suggest these links if we find ourselves buried by turkey or forced to test a PS2 for younger brothers and sisters and therefore unable to update the site:

The latest stadium news from the Liverpool Echo:

Doubts over new Anfield Dec 21 2001
Exclusive by Jane Woodhead, Liverpool Echo

ENGLISH Heritage has today raised "serious concerns" over proposals to build the new Anfield stadium at Stanley Park. The ECHO can reveal that a senior official from English Heritage has met informally with the Friends of Stanley Park. A spokesman for English Heritage told the Echo although no formal consultations about the Liverpool FC scheme have taken place, the club's plans have been discussed on an informal basis.

The spokesman said: "We would have serious concerns about a major development on Stanley Park - one of the city's finest registered parks." The spokesman added that as soon as a formal approach is made, English Heritage will then be seeking meetings with Liverpool Football Club and Liverpool City Council.

Cllr Joe Kenny, an Anfield councillor, said: "This is the best Christmas present the people of Anfield could have wished for. I see this as a very big step forward and a great boost for the campaign." Cllr Harry Jones, a Breckfield councillor, added: "This is a significant step. I believe this adds weight to the argument that the stadium should not go in Stanley Park."

Liverpool city council leader Mike Storey says the views and concerns of English Heritage will be taken into account. He added: "No planning applications have been submitted to date concerning Anfield. If and when that happens the views and concerns of English Heritage will be considered as will the views of the wider Anfield community."

Labour leader Cllr Gideon Ben-Tovim also believes the comments made by English Heritage will be an "important part of the debate." He said: "This is an important issue and I believe this is something which needs full and wide-ranging debate. English Heritage's comments will be an important part of the debate."

Liverpool Football Club has said it is committed to staying in Anfield. It plans to either develop on the existing site or move to Stanley Park. The club said it had no comments to make last night. If and when a plan is submitted English Heritage acts in an "advisory capacity". If English Heritage believes it to be a bad scheme it can advise Liverpool City Council to reject it. If the council does not take this advice, English Heritage has the power to ask the Government Office to intervene. The Government Office for the North West would then decide what steps to take and a public inquiry could follow.

Are LFC to ban large flags? This was posted on RAOTL and if the club is to ban "large" flags it's another nail in the coffin of the atmosphere on the Kop. We should be getting more flags in the ground not less.

"At half time against Fulham I was told, along with another lad, Ian, that we'd not be allowed to bring our BIG flags again (we both have 13-15 footers at the front of the Kop mines the one with the Czech flags in). The Head Steward said it had come from "upstairs" and he nodded towards the control room. I asked him on what grounds and he said "safety lad", I gather Ian - with the other flag was told the same, but we could bring them on "Flag Days" - so kind don't you think? All the other stewards said it was a load of shite and we weren't causing a danger.

"Anyway, im pissed off, taking flags out of the Kop is like getting rid of the singing and im still trying to get my head around it. So from now on when you don't see the flag's its cause were not allowed them.

"Can we get some support going to get the flags back in ? Does anyone know who we can contact within the club ? I've half a mind to go straight to the top. Is there a RAOTL committee ? i.e. to do with Kop mosaic etc we can get help off ? I'm pissed off with the whole "No Flag" attitude. HELP!"

Despite all the promises of change UEFA has decided to keep the current format of the UEFA Champions League with 32 clubs and two group stages. This format will remain in place for the next 3 seasons following "extensive consultations involving clubs, leagues, the UEFA administration and committees".

Amazingly UEFA have forgotten to mention the role of the fans in this consultation. They didn't forget did to consult them did they? Answers on a postcard to Lennart Johansson .....

News from the LFC AGM

Speeches were made by David Moores, Rick Parry and Gerard Houllier. They covered the general state of the club, the financial figures for the last year and the playing side. The financial figures have been covered in ILSA news previously (on the 20/11). The most interesting aspect of the meeting was the extremely emotional appearence of GH after his illness. He gave an excellent speech, the transcript of which can be found on the official site here>>

Arising out of the meeting ILSA has been invited to meet Rick Parry in early January. Hopefully this will be a major step forward for ILSA in working with the club.

A couple of websites worth visiting are Clubs in Crisis and the Anti-Phoenix League site. Clubs in Crisis keeps fans updated when any football club is endangered (and that doesn't cover selling Robbie Fowler or losing at home to Grimsby) and generates support and help from fans around the world. It was set up in 1996 after the troubles experienced by Brighton and was one of the major factors in keeping the club alive.

The Phoenix League is this Premier League II proposed by 6 clubs in Division 1 who are complaining they can't survive financially after getting relegated. Rather than have leagues based on clubs results they propose creaming off those with bigger grounds etc A possible invite to Rangers and Celtic has also been mooted. Now what has this to do with Liverpool I here you ask? Firstly the health of the football league structure is vitally important to all clubs - you're only as strong as your weakest member.

Also in conversations, arising out of these proposals, it has been suggested by some fans in the lower divisions that it would be better if the big 4 clubs in the PL disappeared off to Europe and joined a Superleague leaving more domestic money for the other clubs. None of us in ILSA want an end to domestic competition - we know no fans who do. Also one of the basic tenets of Eurofans is the maintenance of the domestic leagues. These proposals will affect Liverpool fans if they come to fruition and it is important we have our voice heard.

Were you at the 1981 Toyota Cup Final we lost 3-0 against Flamengo in Tokyo? If you were you could help. O Globo, the biggest Brazilian newspaper, want to publish a 20th anniversary article on the game (that 1981 Flamengo team is considered to be one of, if not the finest in Brazilian club history) and would like to contact Liverpool fans who were there for their thoughts. The article is being put together by a Brazilian sports writer currently based in Liverpool. If you can help contact us or Fernando Duarte.
